digital imagingworkshops Photoshop courses with David Hiser and Taylor Liebmann
These workshops are designed to demystify and convey the basic techniques of today’s digital darkroom — the most exciting development in photography in decades. We begin with fundamentals and each participant is soon able to work on their own images, pursuing their own creative path. The emphasis is on individualized instruction in small classes with one instructor for every three students.
How We Teach In addition to our low student - teacher ratio, our instruction is uniquely based on research revealing a logical and inclusive approach which conveys the basic proceedures of the digital darkroom while providing a structure that enables the student to continue to learn and go further with the program.
Our classes are based on a "Digital Darkroom Workflow Checklist” which, when consistently applied, is comparable to going into a traditional darkroom with a roll of exposed film and coming out several hours later with a finished print. Once the student has become familiar with the processes on this checklist, and the persuasive logic of their order, they have a working overview of a very complex and wide-ranging program.
Equipment Each student works at a Macintosh or PC imaging station. A digital projector is used for easy-to-see group demonstrations. Printed materials are provided to reinforce learning of the most important processes. Personal laptop computers can also be used.
Requirements Participants in these classes should be familiar with fundamental computer operations (such as starting applications and opening and saving files in specific locations) and have basic keyboarding skills. If you feel you are not quite “up to speed” with your computer, perhaps you would like to come in for an hour or two of private instruction before you take a workshop.
Schedule These workshops run from 9:00 -12:00 am each morning. Workshops can be scheduled for other dates and times with a three-student minimum. Private instruction is also available. To get the most from these classes you need to take good notes and review them as soon as possible. It is necessary to practice your new Photoshop skills, every afternoon or evening after class. It’s like learning a language; you have to “use it or lose it.”
Costs The five day Photoshop Class ($550) is directed towards professionals and serious imaging enthusiasts. The three-day Photoshop Elements course ($325) is better suited for the amateur digital camera user who needs basic skills for home printing and web use. Private instruction is $72/hour at DAA and $115/hour off site. . Reservations are made on receipt of full payment to Digital Arts Aspen.
Instructors: David Hiser is an experienced photojournalist and photo educator. David’s images have been published in over 100 National Geographic Society books and magazines, as well as many other major publications. He has taught over 50 photography workshops and is on the faculty of Anderson Ranch Arts Center. As a Research Associate at Digital Arts Aspen, David develops the educational programs and arranges public events for the local imaging community.
Taylor Liebmann is our lead instructor for Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0. As, a digital photography mentor at the Aspen Middle School, volunteer with the Aspen FilmFest, and Thunder River Theatre company he has been heavily involved in the valley visual arts for the past ten years. Taylor is quite enthusiastic about the recently released Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0, a reasonably priced and quite powerful program for editing and processing photographs. As he says, “I love working in the digital darkroom and sharing this excitement with others.”
