mission &history

Our mission:
To use our state-of-the-art digital-imaging technology to enhance and empower individual creativity, both as a profitable business, and a non-profit service for community projects.

A short history

digitalartsaspen is the brainchild of two Aspen locals, Charles Abbott and Michael Stranahan. In 1995, Abbott, an accomplished photographer, musician and linguist began to realize his vision of a digital studio where he could show and discuss his work with other creative individuals in this remarkable Rocky Mountain community. Working with educator and arts enthusiast Michael Stranahan, he created a small facility for high-resolution digital imaging and large format print production.

digitalartsaspen's first project was the presentation of images from Abbott’s archive of photos made at the Aspen Music Festival over a 20-year period. In 2000, Charles and Michael leased a 3800 square-foot space in the Aspen Airport Business Center and began a major upgrade of the digitalartsaspen facility — an ongoing process which has made it one of the best equipped digital facilities in the Rocky Mountains.

A digital education program has been created as well. Former National Geographic contributing photographer, David Hiser, leads the “Photoshop for Photographers” and the "Photoshop Elements 2.0, Getting Started with Digital Imaging" workshops. Currently, digital imaging seminars are scheduled monthly through Fall 2004.

digitalartsaspen has become an important center for visual arts and artists in the Roaring Fork Valley. Monthly public events — lectures and demonstrations by technical experts, and slide presentations by artists and photo journalists — are an important part of digitalartsaspen's community commitment to create a “digital salon” where those involved in the visual arts can meet and exchange ideas.
